Jan 6, 2021: Happy 149th birthday to Mr. Scriabin 🎉🥳🎁!
Alexander Scriabin (1872-1915) was a Russian composer and pianist. He wrote 5 symphonies, including the Devine Poem (1903), the Poem of Ecstasy (1907), and the Poem of Fire or Prometheus (1909). His 10 piano sonatas are staples of many pianists’ repertoire: 5th sonata—the most popular, 7th—White Mass, and 9th—Black Mass.
Scriabin’s hundreds of preludes, etudes and poems are considered masterpieces of the 20th century of pianism. His titled pieces such as Fragilité, Satanic Poem, Estrangeté, and Désir are greatly admired.

Jan 7, 2021: This Day in History
Astronomer Galileo Galilei (1564-1642) discovered four of Jupiter’s moons in 1610! I have been listening to Gustav Holst’s “Jupiter” from The Planets to celebrate Galileo’s discovery.
Galileo , who referred to himself only by his given name, was an Italian astronomer, physicist, and engineer. He is called the “father of observational astronomy,” the “father of modern physics, the “father of the scientific method,” and the “father of modern science.”
Holst (1874-1934) was an English composer, arranger, and teacher . The Planets, Op.32, is a seven-movement orchestral suite and his best-known composition, written between 1914-1916. Each movement of the suite is named after a planet of the solar system.
You may find the melody, which you hear in the video, familiar because Holst adapted to fit the meter of the poem by Sir Cecil Spring Rice, “I Vow to Thee, My Country,” which became a patriotic anthem in England .
